An Intro to LLM Visibility

TL;DR: Your brand has a reputation inside AI models. Ask an LLM what it knows about you before you tell it. Use its memory, mistakes, and hallucinations to find and fix gaps in your brand’s visibility.

Lessons from Prompting LLMs at Paceghost

When we built Paceghost, one of the most revealing parts of the process was learning how to prompt large language models to surface what they already “know” about a website or brand. Before analyzing a site’s content, it made sense to first ask the model: “Have you seen this before?”

This idea — what we now call an AI knowledge check — has become a core part of how we assess web visibility in the age of AI-powered search.

1. Ask First, Don’t Tell

If you give a model too much context up front, it just reacts to what you told it. Instead, ask it cold:

“What do you already know about example.com or the brand behind it?”

This tells you whether the domain has left any imprint in the model’s pre-training data. It mimics what an AI assistant like ChatGPT would say if a user brought up your brand — unbiased, based on existing knowledge.

2. Treat the Model Like a Search Engine That “Remembers”

LLMs also act like a memory bank trained on years of public content. If your brand was on Product Hunt, Reddit, GitHub, or a tech blog, it might show up in surprising ways.

Sometimes the model “knows” your product exists but misidentifies what it does. That’s a sign of weak or conflicting signals in your messaging.

3. Recognition Isn’t Binary

Often, the model gives a half-right answer:

“This seems like a developer tool, but I’m not sure.”

This partial recognition is still useful. It tells you what part of your brand’s semantic footprint is coming through and what’s getting lost.

  • Alignment with your actual positioning

4. Hallucinations Are Signals Too

Sometimes the model invents details — wrong features, fake integrations, invented company history. That’s actually useful information. A hallucination means the model is:

  • Confusing your brand with something else
  • Filling in gaps with “plausible defaults”
  • Reacting to weak or ambiguous branding

This gives you a chance to clean up your metadata, clarify your value prop, and improve structured data.

5. Different Models = Different Memory

We’ve tested GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. The difference is real:

  • GPT-3.5 forgets newer domains or blends them into unrelated topics
  • GPT-4 is much better at recalling brands mentioned after 2022, but still inconsistent

This mirrors what real users experience when asking LLMs about sites, tools, or products.

6. Prompting Structure Matters

Our three-step process:

  1. Ask the model what it knows (without feeding it any content)
  2. Show it your site content or a scraped summary
  3. Compare the two: “Does this content align with what users would expect based on prior knowledge?”

This acts like a visibility diff-check — and it’s why setting temperature to zero matters here. You want consistent, factual outputs, not creative variation.

Why This Matters

Most visibility tools focus on SEO. But in the age of AI search and AI assistants, pre-training visibility matters just as much. If a user asks an AI about your brand, the answer they get might come from vague memory — not your actual site.

Knowing what AI already thinks of your brand helps you fix that gap. That’s why this check is part of every Paceghost scan.
